Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

For more information email edweek@det.nsw.edu.au or visit the Game Changer Challenge page.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

On Friday 23rd May 2014, Mortlake Public School celebrated Walk Safely to School Day. Councillor Tony Fasanella visited our school and spoke to the students about road safety and the benefits of walking to school or work. We had a great morning receiving stickers from Councillor Fasanella for walking to school.

The ANZAC service at school was a moving tribute the thousands of Australians who have served our country in times of war.

We were fortunate to have Mr Bob Turner from Concord RSL attend our service yesterday and whole- heartedly agree with his comments that this year's service exceeded the high standards that he has come to expect from Mortlake Public School.

They were visited by Linda Hambley-The Aboriginal Education and Engagement Officer and Aunty Carol the DEC ACLO.

The focus of the visit was for the children to develop a deeper understanding of Aboriginal culture and in particular the original inhabitants of our community. The visit also looked at the purpose of the Acknowledgement of Country as a protocol that Aboriginal people followed when crossing land belonging to other tribes.

Our school leaders later sat with our visitors who helped them write their own Acknowledgement of Country.

Due to wet weather Mortlake's Clean Up Australia Day was postponed to Friday 8th March. After missing out the week before, students were very eager to get outdoors and clean up the playground. Each class wore gloves and cleaned up their designated area. Thank you to Mrs Di Donato for organising the event, the students really enjoyed it!

The Environment and Heritage Minister, Hon Robyn Parker MP, came to visit Mortlake on Thursday 28thFebruary to launch a new website. She outlined all the new material on the website, informing teachers of resources and ideas on ways of how to lead a sustainable life. Did you know that NSW currently fills up an Olympic Pool in just food waste every 9 hours?! It is important to teach students ways in which we can be sustainable in our everyday lives. The students took part in a formal assembly led by the school leaders. Here Isabella outlined some of the great projects the environmental committee are organising around the school to promote sustainability at school. Students received a mini recycling bin to take home for their personal use. Thank you to the Hon Robyn Parker MP, the Office of Environment and Heritage and Mr John Sidoti MP for visiting and choosing our school to launch the website.

What a great day Mortlake had at the swimming carnival on Wednesday 27thFebruary. It was a beautiful warm day, perfect weather conditions at Auburn Swimming Centre. A big thank you to Ms Bastianon for organising such a well-planned event. The carnival ran very smoothly and the students seemed to have a wonderful time. There was a high rate of participation by students, the most we've had in recent history. Also, thank you to all the teachers and parent volunteers for participating and ensuring students were safe at all times.

*Breaking news* in the Girls 11years 50m Freestyle. Kyla broke the record by almost 2 whole seconds. The last time this record was broken was in 2002! Congratulations Kyla!

There will be an upcoming assembly where students will be awarded ribbons based on their times and the winning house will also be announced.

The demountable came in four pieces and was swiftly assembled together by a team of experts and an impressive crane. Both teachers and students are looking forward to stepping inside the new addition that is located at the southern end of the school.

Recorder Concert

On the 30th of August 2012, the recorder group participated in The Mimosa Instrumental Concert at the Opera House. There were 5 children from Mortlake Public School that participated. They were, Daisy B, Mia B, Axel C, Nathaniel H and Desiray L. These five outstanding students were taught by Mrs Knight.

The day started off by catching the train to Circular Quay. Then we had a rehearsal at the Opera House. Mortlake students were so lucky to be taken on a tour by our recorder conductor Susan Sukar.

Afterwards, we had a delicious afternoon tea of chocolate biscuits, prawn crackers, lollies and poppers.

Then we had a chance to run around the Botanical Gardens, doing races and blowing bubbles.

Soon after that, we walked down to Circular Quay to have dinner at Rossini's. We met our parents at the restaurant and had a little play.

Finally we walked back to the Opera House and sat in our seats. Suddenly the lights went down and the concert began. Then the magic of music filled the Opera House. It was outstanding and every single adult and child was dazzled by the amazing music.

After the concert we met up with our parents and went home.

We were all so tired, but we would gladly do it all over AGAIN!!!

	By the AMAZING Recorder Group

Triple P

Parents in our school community have asked for information about Triple P practitioners in our local area. If you head to this website you can find the closest practitioners to the school.

If you are unfamiliar with Triple P, head to the website or read information taken from the website below:

Triple P suggests simple routines and small changes that can make a big difference to your family. It helps you understand the way your family works and uses the things you already say, think, feel and do in new ways that:

Create a stable, supportive and harmonious family.

 Encourage behaviour you like.

Deal positively, consistently and decisively with problem behaviour.

Build positive relationships with your children, so that conflict can be resolved.

Plan ahead to avoid or manage potentially difficult situations.

Take care of yourself as a parent.

While Triple P is almost always successful in improving child behaviour problems, more than half its emphasis is on developing positive attitudes, skills and behaviour. This helps prevent problems arising and fosters family relationships that encourage children to realize their full potential.Triple P has been developed and scientifically proven over 30 years by The University of Queensland Parent and Family Support Centre, with international collaboration. The system is widely in use throughout Australia and increasingly, throughout the world.

Along with a visual update to our school newsletter, we would like to give our newsletter a more interesting name than just Newsletter.

We would love this new name to come from a student, so will be running a newsletter naming competition. We will be accepting nominations for the name of our new school newsletter until the end of Term 3.

The winner will have their name published in the next, newly titled, newsletter.

As part of our revamp of our school newsletter, we would like to forgo sending out printed copies in favour of sending newsletters to our school community via email. Electronic distribution is a much better method of communication with families as it allows the school community to enjoy a coloured and more extensive newsletter without the environmental impact of substantial paper usage.

We would appreciate it if you could take a minute of two and fill out the slip found on the last page of our August newsletter so we can add you to our school newsletter email list. The school will only use this email list to send out school newsletters and your email address will not be displayed.

Only one slip needs to be completed per family. If more than one family member would like the newsletter emailed, please write in the second email address on the slip below.

We will send out a printed copy of the next newsletter to families that have not completed the slip, but would like to transition away from doing so.

If you do not receive the next newsletter via email and have handed in the slip, please first check your junk mail. If it hasn't come through, please let the school know so we can update our email list.

The August newsletter with the applicable slip can be found here.

Ashton - PSSA NSW Boys Hockey State Championships

Ashton represented Mortlake Public School in the Sydney East Schools Sports Association Junior Boys Hockey team in The NSW PSSA Boys Hockey State Championships from Tuesday 26th June - Thursday 28th June at the Cooke Hockey Centre Bathurst NSW.

It was a fabulously exciting week of hockey. The grounds were covered with misty fog as the players emerged early morning like players in a scene from Lord of the Rings and the temperature they played in was from 1-6 degrees most days!

Ashton played an extremely strong defence position throughout the exciting competitive matches over the three days, dominating the opposition and defending many attempted goals. He was particularly strong in the short corners and gave Sydney Easts Hockey Team a strong defence line to be reckoned with!

One of the most rewarding aspects of the State Championships was the team ethics and sportsmanship that all players demonstrated. Their coach Joy Smith was a wonderful leader and helped the boys unite strongly as a team, a remarkable result when they had in total 6 hours of training pre competition!

Ashton made many new friends in his team and they shared some great experiences, they drew the first two matches 2 all, were defeated in the third match 4 / 1 then demonstrated an amazing feat - through pure team unity and psychological sport will power - Sydney East beat their opponents in a 10 nil match win! That game placed them 1 goal away from the semis and enabled Sydney East Hockey team to finish as the top Sydney Team in the state of NSW!

Woolworths Earn & Learn

We are excited to be taking part in the 2012 Woolworths Earn & Learn program. From now until August 12 2012, you can collect stickers at Woolworths that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards), you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your children to collect on the special sticker card that was given to them on June 5. Once it is completed, they can simply bring it back to school and give it to their class teacher or you can drop them into your local Woolworths collection box at the front of the store.

The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of over 7,000 educational resources including mathematics and English resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more! We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful program. If you have any questions, please see Mr Bruscino.

Athletics carnival washout date

Due to our school athletics carnival being washed out today (26 June) we will now be holding the carnival on Thursday 19 July (Week 1 Term 3). The yellow permission note that all students brought in covers this date, so no new permission needs to be given.

If any parents who are now able to assist on the day who were not available for the original day could let Mr Watson know it would be greatly appreciated.
