Building a Kinder Playground: Peer Mediation at Mortlake Public School

At Mortlake Public School, we believe that learning how to resolve conflict is just as important as learning to read and write.

At Mortlake Public School we have a Peer Mediation program - a student-led initiative that helps our younger students solve small disagreements in a fair and friendly way.

What is Peer Mediation?

Peer mediation is a process where trained students help others talk through playground conflicts and find peaceful solutions together. The aim isn’t to decide who’s right or wrong, but to make sure everyone feels heard and respected - and to help all students work together toward a positive outcome.

Who are the Peer Mediators?

Our mediators are Stage 3 students who volunteer their time during breaks to support K–2 students in the playground. Each Peer Mediator is trained in basic conflict resolution and rostered on for one shift per week.

What do Peer Mediators do?

Peer Mediators have a few key responsibilities:

  • Stay neutral – They don’t take sides.

  • Create a safe space – They make sure everyone feels comfortable sharing.

  • Encourage respectful conversation – They help students listen and talk to each other.

  • Maintain privacy – What’s said in a mediation stays private.

What makes a great Peer Mediator?

A great Peer Mediator shows:

  • Good listening skills

  • Patience

  • Respect

  • Fairness

What do K–2 students think?

We spoke with a few of our K–2 students to hear how Peer Mediation has helped them:

“If we have a race and there’s a tie and we both don’t know who won, they help us with that little problem.”
Isabel, S1W

“They can help you do rock, paper, scissors if you can’t agree on something.”
Henry, S1G

“If someone is playing a game and not following the rules, then you can get help from those big kids.”
Sophia, 1/KG

“They help us if we have a fight.”
Archie, KY
